In the Works: GRANITO Oscar Qualification

Earlier this year, director Pamela Yates brought her sixth documentary to Sundance in the new Documentary Premieres section: GRANITO revisits the story of her award-winning 1982 film, WHEN THE MOUNTAINS TREMBLE, which unexpectedly becomes a key piece of evidence of the genocide perpetrated against the Mayan people by the Guatemalan government. I profiled GRANITO in advance of Sundance here.

The Sundance Institute recently announced a new program to work with alumni filmmakers to use Kickstarter. GRANITO is the first project to take advantage of this initiative, as explained here.

Yates and her team are embarking on an independent run for next year’s Academy Awards, and to do that, they need the help of a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign to raise $35,000. According to Academy rules, an Oscar-qualifying run includes a costly conversion of the HD shot project into 35mm and the rental of theatres in NYC and LA for one-week runs, plus advertising. At the time of this writing, the film has reached nearly a quarter of its goal. By the time this post runs, the campaign will still have two weeks to hit its target, and it could use your help, so I hope you’ll consider contributing.

To keep updated on developments with GRANITO, became a fan of the film’s Facebook page.

Update: As of today, the Kickstarter campaign has reached more than half of its goal.
