Coming to NYC’s Stranger Than Fiction this coming Tuesday, May 10: THREE OF HEARTS: A POSTMODERN FAMILY
Susan Kaplan’s standout documentary on a very untraditional relationship had its debut at Toronto in 2004 and went on to play scores of festivals. I screened the doc as one of the centerpieces of NewFest 2005, and it picked up the Best Documentary award at Outfest the same summer.
Kaplan, the founder of NYC’s DocuClub, found an incredibly compelling story in the complex threeway relationship between two men, Sam and Steven, and one woman, Samantha. The men meet, and fall in love, first, and then search for years for a woman who could join them in an equal relationship. When Samantha enters their lives, their triad is set, and they eventually start a family, and a successful business together. Kaplan shot their story for eight years, capturing the unexpected break up of the trio when Steven, after thirteen years together, decides to leave the relationship – with a second baby on the way. THREE OF HEARTS offers fascinating insight into love and relationships, the compromises people make for their loved ones, and the self-discovery that comes along the way.
Note: Kaplan will be in attendance at the screening for a Q&A.
