HALE COUNTY THIS MORNING, THIS EVENING | photo by IDIOM Film/RaMell Ross

Two of these are Sundance award-winning titles making their NYC premiere: Stephen Loveridge’s MATANGI/MAYA/MIA, an intimate portrait of the popstar, opens the event; while RaMell Ross’ HALE COUNTY THIS MORNING, THIS EVENING, an impressionistic look at the lives of two young African American in Alabama.

MAKALA

The other two docs are Khalik Allah’s BLACK MOTHER, a poetic depiction of Jamaica, which debuted at True/False; and Emmanuel Gras’ Cannes-winning MAKALA, which follows a young Congolese man on a trek to sell charcoal.
