About:
A renowned photographer prepares to leave his longtime home and studio.

The film screened as part of DOC NYC, for which our program notes read:
Acclaimed photographer Jay Maisel bought a six-story, 72-room building on the Bowery in 1966. Ever since, the site has served as his home, studio, and repository for a breathtaking collection of items that inspires his photographic work. But now it must be emptied out following its sale in the largest private real estate deal in NYC history. As Maisel prepares for this monumental move, a true end of an era, he reflects on his life and work for the camera of his mentee, photographer and filmmaker Stephen Wilkes.

Special Screening: WELL GROOMED

Coming to NYC’s Rooftop Films tomorrow, Thursday, July 25:
WELL GROOMED

Director:
Rebecca Stern

World Premiere:
SXSW 2019

Select Festivals:
Hot Docs, San Francisco, Cleveland, Montclair, Sarasota, RiverRun, Bentonville, Maui, Woods Hole, Thin Line Doc, Newport Beach

About:
A portrait of competitive creative dog groomers.

In this decidedly light doc, Rebecca Stern introduces viewers to the unusual and playful world of competitive dog grooming, in which dog owners artistically shape and color the coats of their pets into elaborate designs, transforming dogs’ very bodies into cartoonish canvases. Following four women who are on the competitive circuit – it’s not addressed why the hobby seems to be overwhelmingly dominated by women – the film highlights their personalities, creativity, and, for some, drive to win. Though never digging particularly deep nor even concerned with guiding viewers through the basic rules of the activity, it succeeds in conveying its subjects’ enthusiasm, and provides dog lovers with a real-life, even more over-the-top BEST IN SHOW experience.
