I managed to see six other documentaries (or doc hybrids) during my time at Karlovy Vary, beyond the three I wrote about at the end of last week. Other obligations meant that I wasn’t able to focus on documentaries exclusively, so I missed quite a few that were intriguing or that I heard positive reports about, including ARAB ATTRACTION, DETROIT WILD CITY, RAW MATERIAL, and THE MEXICAN SUITCASE. Those I did see included:

Karlovy Vary 2011: Docs in Brief
I may post again next week on the handful of additional non-fiction I saw at Karlovy Vary, but for now, I wrote about three docs in this article for indieWIRE looking at women-focused films.

DocPoint NYC 2011 in Brief
In celebration of its tenth anniversary, DocPoint: Helsinki Documentary Film Festival, the largest non-fiction event in the Nordic region, has organized DocPoint NYC, a weeklong program of Finnish docs from the past decade from June 8-13, with screenings at MoMA, 92Y Tribeca, Scandinavia House, and Union Docs. In addition, Scandinavia House will host two panels: Digital Distribution on Thursday, June 9 and Doc Power on Friday, June 10.
The Helsinkini festival’s regular dates – during the second half of Sundance – have meant that I’ve never been able to attend. Unfortunately and coincidentally, the NYC event takes place the exact dates that I’m out of the country attending the Transilvania International Film Festival. Despite that, between festival appearances elsewhere and some handy screeners, I’ve been able to see quite a few of the dozens of films that are being offered up to New York audiences, many for the first time.

This post looks at a selection of films in the festival’s international and Canadian competitions, while the next will cover the remaining sections.

Hot Docs Forum 2011 in Brief
The Hot Docs Forum, the festival’s international pitching sessions, wrapped up yesterday, with 28 new projects presented over two days to a collection of the most powerful decision makers of various non-fiction funds and broadcast outlets. The Forum has had a great track record of leading to co-production deals or pre-sales, helping to get the selected doc projects made. I run down a number of pitches that I found to be among the most promising in my latest indieWIRE article here.

Hot Docs 2011 in Brief, Part One
I plan to post thoughts on as many Hot Docs films as I can after I return from Toronto. In the meantime, my reactions to eight titles, loosely thematically linked by the concept of home, are available in my first indieWIRE article on this year’s fest here.
