One of the world’s lengthiest film events, the Seattle International Film Festival kicks off three weeks of programming tonight, Thursday, May 14. More than 72 new and recent documentary features will screen through the wrap up of the festival’s 41st edition on Sunday, June 7. While the bulk of these represents standout selections culled from the recent line-ups of other notable events, from Toronto and Berlin to Sundance and SXSW, Seattle also showcases a number of less familiar and some brand new titles as well. Cannes 2015: Documentary Overview
Tomorrow, Wednesday, May 13, sees the launch of the 68th edition of Cannes, the most prestigious film festival in the world – at least for fiction films. Once again, the event’s organizers, as well as those of the concurrent independently-run events, Directors’ Fortnight and International Critics’ Week, barely acknowledge that nonfiction is capable of more than just inside baseball film biographies. Out of 54 features in the Official Selection, there are merely two documentaries, both out of competition. None are in Un Certain Regard or the Special Screenings sections, and instead, as usual, shore up the retrospective and cinephilic Cannes Classics sidebar. DOK.fest Munich 2015 Overview

Göran Hugo Olsson’s meditation on African colonialism made its bow at Sundance last year. Screenings followed at Berlin, Goteborg, Hong Kong, Planete+ Doc, Sydney, BAMcinemaFest, Sarajevo, Busan, New Zealand, Vancouver, CPH:DOX, and IDFA, among others.

DOXA 2015 Overview
The 14th edition of Vancouver’s documentary festival, DOXA, begins today, Thursday, April 30, and runs through Sunday, May 10, presenting more than fifty new and retrospective features in its program, including opener HOW TO CHANGE THE WORLD, the Sundance award winning history of Greenpeace; and closer IRIS, the late Al Maysles portrait of style doyen Iris Apfel. Earlier today, we announced the Special Presentations and Features line-up for Nantucket Film Festival, where I serve as Film Program Director. Coming to PBS’s American Experience and to DVD tomorrow, Tuesday, April 28: LAST DAYS IN VIETNAM
Rory Kennedy’s chronicle of the US withdrawal from Saigon had its world premiere at Sundance last year. It went on to screen at Nantucket, DOC NYC, Sarasota, deadCENTER, Los Angeles, Martha’s Vineyard, and Ashland, among others, and was shortlisted for the Best Documentary Oscar.

Coming to theatres tonight, Friday, April 24: MISERY LOVES COMEDY
Kevin Pollak’s exploration of the process behind stand-up comedy had its world premiere at Sundance earlier this year. The film just screened at Tribeca after being released on VOD earlier this month.

Brett Morgen’s reflection on the iconic Nirvana frontman made its bow at Sundance earlier this year. It has gone on to screen at Berlin, Miami, Dublin, and Full Frame, among other events. It will screen at the upcoming Hot Docs, and come to HBO next month.
