In Theatres: LA SOURCE

Coming to theatres (as part of the International Documentary Association’s Oscar-qualifying DocuWeeks) at NYC’s IFC Center this Friday, August 3 and at LA’s Laemmle NoHo 7 on Friday, August 10: LA SOURCE

Patrick Shen’s story of one Haitian’s quest to provide his village with clean water had its world premiere earlier this Summer at Silverdocs. Upcoming screenings after DocuWeeks include Colorado’s DocuWest, with further engagements forthcoming.

I included the film in my coverage of Silverdocs for Indiewire, writing:

Patrick Shen expands on one of the subjects of his earlier film, THE PHILOSOPHER KINGS, in this portrait of Josue Lajeunesse, a janitor at Princeton by day and cabdriver by night, who finally realizes a long-held dream to bring clean water to his rural Haitian hometown. Against the backdrop of the devastating aftermath of the earthquake, Shen presents an uplifting story of humanitarianism and development stemming from the local level.

DocuWeeks 2012 Overview

The International Documentary Association’s 16th annual DocuWeeks begins this Friday, August 3 in NYC and next Friday, August 10 in Los Angeles. The event has served to qualify over 200 films for Academy Award consideration since its inception, and while recent rule changes by the Academy to feature documentary qualification have thrown some wrinkles into the process – for one thing, features must be reviewed by either the New York Times or the Los Angeles Times – the bicoastal showcase continues. It should be noted that since the LA Times has indicated their intent to review all of the features screening through DocuWeeks, the event retains its Oscar-qualifying aspect.

I’m planning to post a roundup on some of the selections later this month. Among the titles I haven’t yet seen but am hoping to are four that focus on women and girls: Mai Iskander’s WORDS OF WITNESS (pictured), a profile of a young Egyptian journalist and her political awakening; Eugene Martin’s THE ANDERSON MONARCHS, about an African-American girls soccer club team; Nicole Karsin’s WE WOMEN WARRIORS, a focus on the nonviolent resistance led by Colombian indigenous women to combat drug trade violence; and Thomas Riedelsheimer’s GARDEN IN THE SEA, following a Spanish artist as she creates an underwater environmentally-friendly sculpture.

Additional films I’d like to catch include Jane Weiner’s RICKY ON LEACOCK (pictured), a four-decades-in-the-making appreciation of the non-fiction filmmaking legend; Doug Blush and Lisa Klein’s OF TWO MINDS, an exploration of bipolar disorder; and Danielle Gardner’s OUT OF THE CLEAR BLUE SKY, a chronicle of what happened to Cantor Fitzgerald after the World Trade Center attacks.

Special Screening: SOMEWHERE BETWEEN

Coming to the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s “Art of the Real” film series this Thursday, August 2: SOMEWHERE BETWEEN

Linda Goldstein Knowlton’s exploration of Chinese cross-cultural adoption had its world premiere last year at Hot Docs, where it won the people’s choice award. It went on to win a jury prize in Milwaukee, and also screened at Vancouver, Aspen, Portland, and LAFF among others.

I wrote about the film out of Hot Docs for Indiewire, saying:

Finally, this issue of belonging is key to Linda Goldstein Knowlton’s SOMEWHERE BETWEEN, which had its world premiere at Hot Docs this week. The director of THE WORLD ACCORDING TO SESAME STREET embarked on this film after she adopted her young daughter from China. Concerned about the questions her daughter might ask her about identity and cross-cultural adoption, Goldstein Knowlton sought out teenage girls who were similarly adopted from China and raised in the US. Her young subjects speak eloquently about their experiences, and on their varying desire to reconnect with their places of origin to gain a greater sense of self, reach closure with their pasts, or find a truer sense of belonging to their original cultural and homeland. While the doc is unquestionably emotionally affecting, I felt that two of the young women’s stories — Fang, who bonds with a little Chinese girl with cerebral palsy and helps her get adopted; and Hailey, whose return to the site of her abandonment yields surprising results — overshadow the other two subjects, who I’m hard pressed to even remember at this point. In addition, the brief bookends, explaining via narration the filmmaker’s personal reasons for making the film, are unnecessary; I’d prefer to see them gone completely. Still, the film is successful at getting to the heart of some rather huge issues around identity and belonging.

In the Works: BACK ON BOARD: THE STORY OF GREG LOUGANIS

One of the producers of THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS joins the director of the synchronized swimming doc SYNC OR SWIM to tell the story of the champion Olympic diver.

Producer Will Sweeney and director Cheryl Furjanic explore the life and legend of Greg Louganis, considered by many the greatest diver of all time. A four-time Olympian – though he, like the rest of the US team, was unable to compete in 1980 due to the US boycott – Louganis quickly moved from a child prodigy to become a household name and an inspiration to many athletes. One of the indelible moments of the 1988 Olympic Games came when he recovered from a concussion in a preliminary round to go on to win the gold medal. However, in 1994, when he revealed he was gay and HIV positive, he faced a backlash that resulted in the disappearance of most of his lucrative endorsements, and he largely fell out of the public eye. Furjanic and Sweeney’s film explores the Olympian’s eventful and complex past while following him in the present as he returns to the diving board to mentor the 2012 US Olympic diving team.
