On DVD: MURDER BY PROXY

Available on DVD: MURDER BY PROXY: HOW AMERICA WENT POSTAL

Emil Chiaberi’s exposé of workplace conditions that drive people to their breaking point screened at a number of festivals beginning in 2010, including Montreal World and Strasbourg. It became available on DVD last month.

Taking as its point of departure the series of workplace shootings that took place in the mid-1980s and 1990s, most notably at post offices, Chiaberi’s film seeks to go beyond sensationalism to try to understand why seemingly ordinary people one day snapped. Media footage of the incidents at the time focused on the idea that there was something wrong with the individuals, but through contemporary interviews, a different picture emerges to explain this desperate behavior. Subjects in Chiaberi’s film argue that the murderous impulses were the result of abuse by employers and generally demeaning working conditions, and, through the course of the film, some of the interviewees are involved with trying to get legislation passed to address this issue. Perhaps most provocatively, Chiaberi argues that we’re on the verge of a potential epidemic of violence due to the recession – laying the blame squarely at the feet of our political leaders, who, since Reagan, have systematically stripped workers of their power, instead privileging their superiors. While the film has its issues – the occasional narration is weak, the sound levels are off, and it errs on the side of the conventional talking heads issue doc – Chiaberi gets good material out of his subjects, and its relevance to recent attempts to union bust beg an update that can help it resonate even more for today’s audience.

On DVD: WHEN CHINA MET AFRICA

Coming to DVD today, Tuesday, May 22: WHEN CHINA MET AFRICA

Marc & Nick Francis’ look at the expansion of Chinese interests in Zambia has screened extensively since its premiere in 2010. Festival appearances have included IDFA, Margaret Mead, FESPACO, Full Frame, Encounters, Sheffield, and Rotterdam.

The makers of BLACK GOLD take a different approach to documenting globalization, focusing on African economic development by China. Their protagonists’s stories reflect the seemingly symbiotic but clearly imbalanced relationship between an economic superpower and a country rich in resources but lacking in infrastructure. On the African side is Felix Mutati, Zambia’s trade minister, leading the charge to facilitate the expansion of Chinese interests in his country, hopeful the these initiatives will provide a much needed economic boon. On the Chinese side are Mr Liu, a successful owner of multiple farms who complains of his Zambian farmhands’ work ethic; and Mr Li, an engineer contracted to complete a critical highway, but whose job is hampered by delays and budget cuts. More than a portrait of culture clash, the Francis’ smart film raises provocative questions around China’s involvement in Africa – will it benefit both, or instead lead to a form of economic colonization?

Noting the specific challenges faced by LGBT seniors, including reduced access to healthcare, increased solitude, and, for some, either late-in-life coming out, or, for others, a forced return to the closet, director PJ Raval has set out to document their lives around America. Interweaving interviews with archival footage, the film explores their past and present, and the way that age is addressed within the gay community. Continue reading
