DOC NYC 2015’s weekend DOC NYC PRO programming on Saturday, November 14 and Sunday, November 15 includes several Masterclasses, allowing documentary filmmakers and curious film lovers an inside look into the creative process.

MASTERCLASS: CINEMATOGRAPHY
Saturday, November 14 – 11:30am-12:45pm
Documentary cinematographers shape the style and tone of a film; they know how to adapt at a moment’s notice, and incorporate current technological offerings into their production. Hear from Axel Baumann (MISSION BLUE), Mira Chang (JESUS CAMP), Tom Hurwitz (THE QUEEN OF VERSAILLES), and Juan Martinez (Sony) as they share insights into achieving eye-catching imagery. Moderator: Maro Chermayeff (Department Chair, SVA MFA Social Documentary Film). Co-presented by SVA MFA Social Documentary Film.
MASTERCLASS: ANIMATION & GRAPHICS
Saturday, November 14 – 1:15-2:30pm
Animation, graphics and other visual effects are often standard features of documentaries, helping to illustrate arguments and capture the viewer’s attention. They can also be vital elements of the narrative. Designing and implementing these elements can be intimidating. Learn about what’s possible through examples from animators Allison and Anthony Brownmoore (THE SUNSHINE MAKERS, LISTEN TO ME MARLON), Molly Schwartz (WATCHERS OF THE SKY) and Qa’ed Mai (TESTED).
MASTERCLASS: INTERNATIONAL CO-PRODUCTIONS
Saturday, November 14 – 3:00-4:00pm
International co-productions can help films complete their funding and reach global audiences, but they also pose numerous challenges at balancing the needs of different funders. This panel includes Image Nation Abu Dhabi’s Danielle Perissi (HE NAMED ME MALALA); producer Julie Goldman (BEST OF ENEMIES) and HBO Documentary Films’ Nancy Abraham. Followed by a reception from 4:00-6:00pm. Co-presented by Image Nation Abu Dhabi.
MASTERCLASS: EDITING
Sunday, November 15 – 11:30am-12:45pm
What do documentary editors do to bring a story to life? Esteemed documentary editors Karen KH Sim (WATCHERS OF THE SKY) and Fiona Otway (HELL AND BACK AGAIN) share storytelling secrets as they review favorite scenes from their own work. Moderator, Oscar-nominated Jeanne Jordan (TROUBLESOME CREEK). Co-presented by the Karen Schmeer Film Editing Fellowship.
MASTERCLASS: SOUND DESIGN & COMPOSING
Sunday, November 15 – 1:15-2:30pm
Music and sound have become essential elements for the documentary filmmaker. How can you successfully utilize sound design in your film? Todd Griffin (THE OVERNIGHTERS), Bernardo Ruiz (KINGDOM OF SHADOWS), and others present case studies of innovative collaborations.
MASTERCLASS: THE ART OF THE PODCAST
Sunday, November 15 – 3:00-4:15pm
Podcasts are a growing platform for nonfiction storytelling. Experts Emily Botein (WNYC), Matt Lieber (Gimlet Media), and Eric Nuzum (Audible) talk about the power and expanding reach of this medium. Moderator: Anna Sale (Death, Sex, and Money). Co-presented by Audible.
