Cara Mertes, Director of Ford Foundation’s JustFilms, shares her insights on supporting documentaries around the world.

From wildfires and water crises to food instability and melting icecaps, news outlets and documentary filmmakers have struggled to engage audiences with some of the most pressing problems of our time. Join filmmakers Kristi Jacobson (A PLACE AT THE TABLE), David Abel (SACRED COD), along with Scott Hamilton Kennedy (FOOD EVOLUTION) and Discovery’s John Hoffman for a discussion about what works and what doesn’t, and how to define a successful environmental film. Moderator: Josh Baran (Baran Strategies). Co-presented by Discovery.

Social issues are a hot topic in documentary filmmaking. Borderline Media’s Jennifer MacArthur, along with Taj Paxton (Logo Documentary Films) and Brittany Huckabee (AFTER FIRE), will discuss how producers can help filmmakers best approach issue-oriented projects to turn them into dynamic and compelling stories. Moderator: Nancy Schwartzman (Circle of 6) Co-presented by National Geographic Channel.

Hear from Motto Pictures’ Julie Goldman (LIFE, ANIMATED), Loki Films’ Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady (NORMAN LEAR: JUST ANOTHER VERSION OF YOU), and Warrior Poets’ Jeremy Chilnick (RATS) about what it takes to run a successful documentary production company. Moderator: Erika Dilday (Maysles Center).

What does it mean to be a creative producer and how do you become one? Drawing on their experience working with and as creative producers, Impact Partners’ Dan Cogan and Jenny Raskin, along with filmmakers Donal Mosher (PEACE IN THE VALLEY), Lauren Haber (NARCO CULTURA), and Jayson Jackson (WHAT HAPPENED, MISS SIMONE?), discuss the responsibilities, challenges, and rewards of taking on this role.
