On DVD: WACKEN

New to DVD this week:
WACKEN

Director:
Norbert Heitker

Premiere:
German cinemas (July 2014)

Select Festivals:
In-Edit, Belfast, Docville, Athens, Bergen, IndieLisboa, Krakow

About:
A 3D concert doc about a massive four-day heavy metal music festival in a small German town.

Filmed during the 24th annual Wacken Open Air metal festival in 2013, Heitker’s massive undertaking consists of several performances by both name bands – Henry Rollins, Motörhead, Alice Cooper, Deep Purple, Rammstein, Anthrax, Anvil, Lamb of God – and less-widely known ones, intercut with footage of the campgrounds and brief profiles of a handful of fans and of unknown international bands who won local contests to face off in a competition in Wacken. Amongst the general music fest partying is a lot of talk of and appreciation for the sense of community engendered by the event. It’s a self-selecting project – non-fans of the music genre or performers features won’t likely be interested or get much out of the film – but it’s professionally done for what it is.

GETTING NAKED: A BURLESQUE STORY

Director:
James Lester

Premiere:
Venice 2017 (Venice Days)

Select Festivals:
DOC NYC, Cleveland, Newport Beach, Berkshire, Greenwich, Florida, SF DocFest

About:
An inside look at the lives of several contemporary burlesque performers.

I previously wrote about the film for DOC NYC’s program, saying:
Uncovering NYC’s neo-burlesque subculture, director James Lester’s film offers a lingering look at several sexy denizens of the nightlife scene, including Gal Friday, Hazel Honeysuckle, and the Schlep Sisters Minnie Tonka and Darlinda Just Darlinda, whose acts range from the classic glamorous striptease to more overtly comedic schtick. Followed on- and offstage, these gifted performers reveal the liberation and empowerment they’ve gained from burlesque, even as they contend with the physical and financial demands of their competitive art form.

Stephen Robert Morse and Nicholas Hampson

Premiere:
Sheffield 2017

About:
A portrait of one of the most divisive figures in Dutch politics.

I previously wrote about the film for DOC NYC’s program, saying:
With his signature coif, extremist views against Islam, and positioning as a populist candidate, politician Geert Wilders has been called the Dutch Donald Trump. With unprecedented access to the controversial figure, who has lived under armed guard for the past dozen years due to death threats against him, this compelling film charts Wilders’ rise to power as he seems poised to become the Prime Minister of the Netherlands. Directors Stephen Robert Morse and Nicholas Hampson explore the provocative politician and his undeniable, disturbing influence on Dutch politics.
