Lisa Lax and Nancy Stern’s profile of Tennessee’s Lady Vols coach debuted at Tribeca earlier this year. Commissioned as part of ESPN’s women focused sports doc series, Nine for IX, it is being released in a boxed set of the entire first season of films.

In Theatres: AMERICAN PROMISE

american promiseComing to theatres this Friday, October 18, with a sneak preview at BAM tomorrow, Tuesday, October 15 : AMERICAN PROMISE

Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson’s epic chronicle of education and the young African-American male had its world premiere earlier this year at Sundance, where it won a special jury award. Its fest circuit has included the New York Film Festival, Full Frame, and Hot Springs, among others.

On DVD: THE DIPLOMAT

Jennifer Arnold and Senain Kheshgi’s profile of Cold War politics and East German ice-skating debuted at Tribeca earlier this year. It was broadcast on ESPN this Summer, one of the initial titles in the network’s new female-focused 30 for 30 doc series offshoot, Nine for IX. It now joins the other films in that series in a new DVD box set.

Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg’s look at sexism in sports journalism made its world premiere at Tribeca this year. The film was commissioned by ESPN for its women-directed, women in sports doc series, Nine for IX, an offshoot of the network’s popular 30 for 30 doc brand. After its broadcast this Summer, the doc comes to DVD in a boxed set with the other initial Nine for IX films.

Richard Rowley’s Jeremy Scahill-led investigation into America’s secret wars made its world premiere at Sundance this year, winning the documentary cinematography award. It’s gone on to screen at True/False, IFF Boston, Seattle, Dallas, Traverse City, Melbourne, and New Zealand, among others, and to enjoy a limited theatrical release.

On Cable: BRONIES

bronies_headComing to Logo’s WHAT!? doc series this coming Monday, October 14: BRONIES: THE EXTREMELY UNEXPECTED ADULT FANS OF MY LITTLE PONY

Laurent Malaquais’ exploration of the adult male fanbase for a girls’ cartoon premiered at LA’s Equestria convention last November. It has also screened at Kansas City FilmFest, and has been released on DVD and VOD.

Doug Hamilton’s look at the transformation of Green Day’s music into a Broadway show had its world premiere at SXSW earlier this year. Other screenings have included Newport Beach, Lincoln Center’s Sound + Vision, London, and the CBGB Film Festival. Simultaneous with its theatrical release through Abramorama, FilmBuff releases the film on VOD via iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, Cable Movies On Demand, Google Play, Xbox, Sony Playstation, CinemaNow and Vudu.

Yamagata 2013: Documentary Overview

festival-yamagata-international-documentary-film-festival-2013-poster-mask9Japan’s Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival is the oldest nonfiction event in Asia, established in 1989. Held biennially, this year marks its 13th edition, which begins today, Thursday, October 10 and runs through next Thursday, October 17. In an area of the world with relatively few such dedicated events, the festival offers a special focus on regional and national documentary filmmaking, with supplementary international and retrospective programming. What follows are some brief highlights where possible, as the fest’s website offers only cursory information on the majority of its programming sections. Continue reading
