Finish Your Doc Panel Descriptions

MASTERCLASS: EDITING
10:30-11:40am

What do documentary editors do when the pieces don’t fit? Esteemed documentary editors Carla Gutierrez (REPORTERO, LA CORONA) and Aaron Wickenden (FINDING VIVIAN MAIER, THE TRIALS OF MUHAMMAD ALI) share favorite scenes from their own work and walk us through how they overcame the challenges they faced in editing them.

MASTERCLASS: HOW TO PRODUCE AN AWARD-WINNING ARCHIVAL DOCUMENTARY
12:00-1:10pm

Producer Tom Jennings, whose many awards include the Peabody Award for his 100% archival based documentary, THE ASSASSINATION OF MARTIN LUTHER KING, will lead an indepth discussion on the ins and outs of finding and piecing together historical footage with built-in drama and using the intrinsic narrative of the archival material. His high-profile films, including 9/11, THE HEARTLAND TAPES (Smithsonian Channel), and FIDEL CASTRO, THE LOST TAPES (PBS), are powerful showcases of raw archival television footage that often never aired before.

MASTERCLASS: SOUND DESIGN
2:00-3:10pm

Music and sound have become essential elements in the nonfiction narrative. What is the intricate relationship between music and documentary films? How can you successfully utilize sound design in a documentary? Composer and producer Todd Griffin (THE OVERNIGHTERS, E-TEAM) , along with Tom Paul (Gigantic Post) and David Teague (editor E-TEAM, CUTIE AND THE BOXER) present several examples, leading us through this creative process.

MASTERCLASS: GRAPHICS & ANIMATION
3:30-4:40pm

Animation, graphics and other visual effects are often standard features of documentaries, helping to illustrate arguments and capture the viewer’s attention. They can also be vital elements of the narrative. Designing and implementing these elements can be intimidating. Learn about what’s possible through examples from editor Nick Clark (THE LIFE AND MIND OF MARK DEFRIEST), filmmaker Jillian Schlesinger (MAIDENTRIP, animation by Moth Collective) and others.
