Special Screening: LOS ANGELES PLAYS ITSELF

Screening as part of a retrospective of Thom Andersen’s works during the Whitney’s 2012 Biennial tomorrow Wednesday, April 4 through Saturday, April 7: LOS ANGELES PLAYS ITSELF

Andersen premiered his essay on the cinematic Los Angeles at Toronto in 2003. The film screened extensively at other major festivals including Sundance, Rotterdam, Marseille, Karlovy Vary, and CPH:DOX.

Clocking in at nearly three hours, Andersen’s ambitious project is a masterful dissection of the various ways the city of Los Angeles has been depicted in film, and what these (mis)representations say about the real city and how the general public sees it. Divided into three sections, Andersen’s essay film explores the city as background, character, and subject, respectively, through clips from a remarkable number of films and a cogent narration, which, while essentially a lecture, is always engaging. By focusing on a city that is at the heart of the creation of illusions, the project holds a mirror to the undeniably influential film industry that has called it home for nearly its entire existence, and how it has been instrumental in creating and continuously reinventing a mythical version of Los Angeles – its geography, history, culture – that has been exported beyond the city limits to the rest of the world. The film is at once a piece of film criticism, an excavation of urban archaeology and anthropology, and a love letter to Andersen’s home since the age of seven.

Thessaloniki Documentary Festival 2012 in Brief, Part Three: True Crime

Wrapping up my thoughts on the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival (part one, covering Greek films may be found here, and part two, looking at international portraits may be found here, while Indiewire articles are here and here), today’s post looks at a surprising number of films dealing primarily with prisons or crime. Thessaloniki Documentary Festival 2012 in Brief, Part Two: Portraits

Earlier this week, Indiewire posted my articles about the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival here and here, while I included some expanded thoughts on the Greek selections here. TDF screens more than just Greek films, so many in fact that I’m splitting up my post on the international selections into two: Today’s covers a number of portraits of places and people, while the next will focus on a thematic of crime and prisons. Thessaloniki Documentary Festival 2012 in Brief, Part One: Greek Docs

Yesterday I returned from five nights in Greece, where I attended the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival for the first time. I wrote about the event at more length for Indiewire here and highlighted a number of docs in progress presented at the event here. Since I didn’t write about too many specific films in Iw, my usual fest roundup of films watched will be covered here for the Greek films and in another post later this week for the international selections. New Directors/New Films 2012: Documentary Overview

The 41st edition of New Directors/New Films, a co-presentation of the Museum of Modern Art and the Film Society of Lincoln Center, begins next Wednesday, March 21 and runs through Sunday, April 1.

As always, ND/NF is a tightly curated showcase of international emerging talent – the series consists of 29 features and 12 shorts from 28 countries. There are only four feature docs included, but of the three that I’ve already seen (Sundance titles), they represent some of the strongest, most provocative non-fiction work of the past few months:

5 BROKEN CAMERAS

THE AMBASSADOR

HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE

I haven’t yet seen the fourth film, Anca Damian’s CRULIC: THE PATH TO BEYOND, from Romania, which has already picked up awards at CPH:DOX, Locarno, and Warsaw.

While not technically a doc in its final form, a fifth film, another Sundance alumnus, Terence Nance’s AN OVERSIMPLIFICATION OF HER BEAUTY, has its origins in non-fiction, and utilizes documentary strategies to tell its winning story about love and desire.

SXSW 2012: Docs in Brief, Part Two: Other Sections

My last post on this year’s SXSW included my brief thoughts on the features I saw in the Documentary Competition and Emerging Visions sections. Today’s wraps up with profiles of eleven additional films from various other fest sections. Once again, I unfortunately wasn’t able to fit in all the titles I wanted to see, including GREGORY CREWDSON: BRIEF ENCOUNTERS, LOST AND SOUND, THE WILL, and DREAMS OF A LIFE. Continue reading
