central park 5Coming to VOD tomorrow Friday, December 7: THE CENTRAL PARK FIVE

Sarah Burns, David McMahon, and Ken Burns’ dissection of the 1989 NYC rape case and its aftermath premiered at Cannes this year. Its festival stops have included Telluride, Toronto, London, and DOC NYC, among others, and it has been in select theatres since late November. It’s among a handful of strong docs whose absence was noted from the Oscar shortlist announced this Monday.

In Theatres: ONLY THE YOUNG

Coming to NYC’s IFC Center this Friday, December 7: ONLY THE YOUNG

Elizabeth Mims and Jason Tippet’s fresh look at adolescence premiered at True/False this year. Its festival circuit has included San Francisco, Hot Docs, and Silverdocs, where it claimed a jury award. Oscilloscope has plans to expand the film to additional theatres through the end of January.

In Theatres: TCHOUPITOULAS

tchouComing to NYC’s IFC Center this Friday, December 7: TCHOUPITOULAS

The Ross Brothers’ evocative portrait of a nocturnal journey through New Orleans made its premiere at SXSW this year. It followed with screenings at Hot Docs, BAMcinemaFest, Silverdocs, and CPH:DOX, among others. Oscilloscope will expand the film to other cities through February.

On VOD: SOUND IT OUT

Coming to VOD today, Tuesday, December 4: SOUND IT OUT

Jeanie Finlay’s affectionate portrait of the last record store in a small town made its premiere at last year’s SXSW. It went on to screen at Edinburgh, Sheffield, and Silverdocs, among others. FilmBuff is releasing the film on iTunes, Amazon, YouTube, and Vudu.

85th Academy Awards: Best Documentary Feature Shortlist Announced

imposterThe Best Documentary Feature Oscar shortlist was announced today. Congratulations to all the filmmakers for making it to this stage! I’m especially happy to see so many alums from Sundance and DOC NYC receive this acknowledgement.

Stacy Peralta’s premiered his history of the titular skateboarding team at Sundance this year. Screenings followed at Santa Barbara, Sidewalk, Atlantic, and Tallgrass, among others.

In the Works: AMERICAN COMMUNE

Two filmmaking sisters tell the story of their former home – America’s largest commune.

american communeIn the early 1970s, a group of more than 300 hippies traveled by caravan from San Francisco across the US to eventually settle in Tennessee. Purchasing over a thousand acres, they founded The Farm, a self-governing, self-sufficient commune that grew to 1,500 members by 1980, and attracted curious visitors by the thousands. Sisters Nadine Mundo and Rena Mundo Croshere were born there. Though they left The Farm as children, it left its indelible mark. Seeking out the founders of this still-extant alternative society, and through interviews with their parents and fellow Farm children, the Mundos offer an insider’s view of a fascinating social experiment.
