Sundance 2016: Competition & NEXT Lineups Announced

sundance 2016As the 2016 Sundance Film Festival lineup is revealed, I’ll be including pointers here. The US and World Cinema Dramatic and Documentary Competitions, plus the NEXT section, were announced today here.

The previously announced Midnight section may be found here. Pointers for other sections will follow as they are announced over the next week.

Daniel Junge’s exploration of the life of the daredevil showman had its world debut at Sundance this year. It went on to screen at SXSW, Miami, Cleveland, Dallas, IFF Boston, Seattle, Sydney, deadCENTER, Las Vegas, Melbourne, and New Zealand, among other events.

On Cable: RACING EXTINCTION

racing extinctionComing to Discovery Channel worldwide tomorrow, Wednesday, December 2: RACING EXTINCTION

Louie Psihoyos’ call to prevent mass extinction had its world premiere at Sundance this year. It went on to screen at Nantucket, Telluride Mountainfilm, DC’s Environmental fest, Seattle, Maui, SF Green, and Boulder, among other fests. Discovery will broadcast the film in 220 international markets, notably while the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP21, will be taking place in Paris.

On DVD: THE HUNTING GROUND

Kirby Dick’s exposé of campus rape made its debut at Sundance this year. Screenings followed at DOC NYC, True/False, Seattle, Traverse City, Martha’s Vineyard, Stockholm, and Poland’s American Festival, among other fests, as well as college campuses around the country.

Matthew Bate’s exploration of an ordinary man’s documented life debuted at Sundance this year. Other fest appearances included Rotterdam, Cleveland, Hot Docs, Open City Docs, Docville, and Doc Aviv, among others. It now comes to VOD via Vimeo on Demand.

On VOD: BEST OF ENEMIES

Morgan Neville and Robert Gordon’s look back at the infamous Buckley/Vidal debates debuted at Sundance this year. Other fest berths have included DOC NYC, Nantucket, BAMcinemaFest, AFI Docs, Outfest, San Francisco, SXSW, Hot Docs, Full Frame, Srasota, Miami, and IFF Boston, among others. The film was released on several VOD platforms earlier this month, and now comes to Netflix.

On DVD: THE SQUARE

squareComing to DVD today, Tuesday, November 24: THE SQUARE (AL MIDAN)

Jehane Noujaim’s immersive look at the Egyptian revolution premiered at Sundance in 2013, where it won an audience award. A revised version made its way to Toronto, winning another audience award win, before screening at the New York Film Festival, DOC NYC, and Dubai, among others, before it was nominated for the Best Documentary Feature Academy Award.

3 1/2 minutesComing to HBO today, Monday, November 23: 3 1/2 MINUTES, TEN BULLETS

Marc Silver’s look at a notorious case of race-fueled gun violence debuted at Sundance earlier year, where it picked up a special jury award. Screenings followed at Full Frame, Seattle, Sheffield, Ashland, RiverRun, and Human Rights Watch, among others.

Sundance 2016: Midnight Lineup Announced

sundance 2016This morning, the first lineup announcement for the 2016 Sundance Film Festival was made, revealing the feature selections in the Midnight section. The nine titles may be found here.

The festival will take place January 21-31. Remaining lineup announcements will be announced in the coming weeks.
