Reach Your Audience Panel Descriptions

SOCIAL-MEDIA WORKSHOP
10:30-11:40am

Building a broad, dynamic, engaged community around your film is the goal of any marketing plan, and social media should represent a healthy percentage of your efforts. Digital-media expert Kristin McCracken, along with Director/Producer Suzanne Mitchell, will lead us through examples of well-organized social media campaigns and answers all your questions in this workshop.

HOW TO MAXIMIZE DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION
12:00-1:10pm

Wonder how a film ends up on iTunes, Netflix, YouTube, Vimeo, and Amazon? Enter the world of digital distribution with representatives from The Orchard (Danielle DiGiacomo), Vimeo (Jeremy Boxer), and SundanceNow (Linda Pan), who lead a candid discussion on the growth of the marketplace and and how best to access this audience.

DOCUMENTARIES ARE NARRATIVE – THE ARTISTRY OF NONFICTION STORYTELLING
2:00-3:10pm

Nonfiction stories can be told in surprising and dramatic ways, and may look a little different than what you are used to. Filmmakers Omar Mullick (THESE BIRDS WALK), Nick Bentgen (NORTHERN LIGHT), and Sierra Pettengill (TOWN HALL) show us clips and discuss their creative, and perhaps unexpected, storytelling processes.

MAKING A LIVING AS A DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKER
3:30-4:40pm

Experts agree that with today’s technology it’s much easier to make a film now than in the past, but that has perhaps resulted in too many stories and too much competition. So how can filmmakers manage to get paid, sustain a career, and captivate new audiences? Filmmakers Amir Bar-Lev (HAPPY VALLEY), Marshall Curry (POINT AND SHOOT), Liz Garbus (LOVE, MARILYN), and Nelson George (FINDING THE FUNK) lead the discussion, sharing their insights into these and other challenges to nonfiction filmmakers who are trying to make their way and make a living.

Why You Should Attend:
Fittingly, Doc-A-Thon comes to a close with a day all about getting your finished film in front of an audience. From becoming comfortable with social media tools and understanding the ever-changing digital landscape to expanding the audience for cinematic nonfiction and actually earning a living, these panels help you connect your craft with viewers.
