DOC NYC‘s expanded panel series, Doc-A-Thon, begins this Friday! A previous post profiled the sessions on offer for Doc-A-Thon’s first day; today’s post looks at the Masterclasses which will be presented at the IFC Center on the second day. As noted before, Doc-A-Thon has a daily filmmaking theme that forms the backbone of the day’s four panels. The theme for Day 2, Monday, November 12, is “Shoot Your Doc.” Whether you’ve started filming, or are itching to get that production started, Day 2’s experts can offer invaluable information to inspire your doc, and hopefully help you make it better.
Shoot Your Doc Panel Descriptions:
Masterclass: Directing:
10:30-11:45am
Everyone wants to be a director, but do you know what you’re getting yourself into? Acclaimed directors Liz Garbus (LOVE, MARILYN) and Bart Layton (THE IMPOSTER) discuss their films and their working process, from finding their concept and characters and developing their story to assembling and working with their team.
Masterclass: Producing:
12:15-1:30pm
Documentary filmmakers often spread themselves thin wearing too many hats. Working with a strong producer can make the difference between a successful film and a lost opportunity, but emerging directors don’t always fully understand what a producer does. Established producers Jeremy Chilnick (MANSOME, POM WONDERFUL PRESENTS THE GREATEST MOVIE EVER SOLD) and Amy Briamonte (INTO THE ABYSS, CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS) explain their wide-ranging role.
Masterclass: Cinematography:
2-3:15pm
Cinematographers are instrumental in making films memorable, working with their directors to capture the right moment and to establish a documentary’s look. Noted DPs Tom Hurwitz (THE QUEEN OF VERSAILLES, VALENTINO) and Alan Jacobsen (RACING DREAMS, THE TRIALS OF DARRYL HUNT) share clips from their work and insight on documentary aesthetics.
Masterclass: In Conversation with Alex Gibney:
3:45-5pm
Join us for an intimate one-on-one conversation with Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney, whose credits include TAXI TO THE DARK SIDE, ENRON: THE SMARTEST GUYS IN THE ROOM, and MEA MAXIMA CULPA, playing at DOC NYC. Find out the secrets behind his prolific output.
Why You Should Attend:
The panelists for Day 2 represent nominees and winners of Oscar, Emmy, Spirit, and Gotham awards, as well Sundance and SXSW festival awards, among many others. They know their craft, and they’re willing to share their insight with Doc-A-Thon attendees.
